Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition that typically occurs after an injury, surgery, stroke, or heart attack. It is characterized by severe and persistent pain, often affecting a limb (such as an arm or leg), and is thought to involve a malfunction of the peripheral and central nervous systems.

Symptoms:

Persistent Pain: Severe, often burning pain that is disproportionate to the initial injury, usually affecting an arm or leg.
Swelling: Swelling in the affected area, which may fluctuate.
Changes in Skin Color and Temperature: The skin may become pale, red, or bluish and may feel warm or cold compared to the opposite limb.

Other Symptoms:

Sensitivity to Touch: The affected area may be extremely sensitive to touch or temperature changes, leading to allodynia (pain from stimuli that normally do not cause pain).
Changes in Hair and Nail Growth: Changes in the growth pattern or appearance of hair and nails in the affected area.
Decreased Mobility: Reduced range of motion and stiffness in the affected limb.
Muscle Weakness and Atrophy: Weakness in the affected muscles and potential muscle wasting over time.
Emotional Changes: Increased anxiety, depression, or mood swings due to chronic pain.

Causes:

  • Trauma or Injury: Often develops after an injury, such as a fracture, sprain, or surgery.
  • Nerve Injury: Damage to peripheral nerves can trigger CRPS.
Infection: Certain infections may lead to the onset of CRPS.
  • Immune Response: An abnormal response of the immune system may play a role in the development of CRPS.
  • Other Conditions: Conditions such as stroke or heart disease may be associated with CRPS.
  • Psychological Factors: Stress and psychological factors may contribute to the development and severity of CRPS.

Treatment Goal:

Identify and treat the underlying nerve injury, while also alleviating symptoms of central and peripheral sensitization.
